FEATURES EXTRA HEIGHT AND WEIGHT LIMITS

California law states that infants must be in a rear-facing car seat,
placed in the back seat, until at least 20 lbs and 1 year old. The Graco
Infant SafeSeat is one of the only infant car seats on the market that
will accommodate a child rear-facing up to 30 lbs and 32” tall. The
convenient stay in car base features an innovative belt lock-off which
tightly secures the vehicle seatbelt for easy installation. One-hand
dial adjustment on the base will also help ensure that you have the
proper 45 degree angle for installation. The patent pending, 5-point
harness buckle features a front adjust which make buckling and
unbuckling more pleasant for both parent and child, and the 180 degree
rotating canopy will keep the sun out of your baby’s eyes. Extra
cushioning is provided with the removable infant head support. LATCH
equipped for easy installation. Engineered and crash tested to meet or
exceed the U.S. Compliance Standard.

PROPER INSTALLATION TECHNIQUE
(reference from Inventive Parent.com, Kidica.com and DMV.org)
The base and carrier should only go in the back of seat, preferably in
the center area. Never place a car seat in front of an active air bag.
Make sure the seat is firmly attached to the car; don’t be afraid to
really exert some force when you’re tightening the seat belt. Car seats
should not move more than 1” in any direction.
The seat needs to be at a 45-degree angle with the carrier installed.
Make sure the carrier straps are tight and the harness clip is level and
even with the baby’s armpits. If you can pinch the edges of a strap
together between your fingers, the straps are too loose. There should be
no more than one finger’s width between the harness strap and your
child’s collar bone.
Make sure the straps are in the slot that lines up just below or closest
to the infant’s shoulders so that the straps run up and over the
shoulders. Make sure the straps are level, even and not twisted.
Do not place anything under the harness straps. Place blankets over the
straps, not under them. Do not place heavy jackets, clothing or blankets
on your baby because this bulk keeps the straps from fitting snugly.
When the carrier is snapped into the base the handle must be placed in
the down position.
The LATCH System: If you have a vehicle manufactured after 2002, simply
feel around the back seat until you find a couple of heavy metal
latches. These are designed to hold the anchors and tethers that come
with the new car seats. Thus, you can now hook a car seat into the back
of a vehicle without utilizing the seat belts. But all the other aspects
of securing the seat still apply, mainly ensuring the straps are all
nice and taut and the seat does not move about.
Some older vehicles (especially those manufactured prior to 1997) may
require the use of the locking clip; the piece of metal that looks like
the letter I on its side. The locking clip is placed into the base seat
through the seat belt; if the car seat begins to move forward when the
brakes are depressed then the clip acts to prevent too much slippage.
